I don’t know what ‘Holiday’ by Port St. Willow is actually about but my lord I know it’s lovely. From the atmospheric introductory noise track to the haunting swirls of delayed guitar which close the album ‘Holiday’ succeeds in creating an album which is both ambient and interesting enough to hold the listeners attention. Recalling most strongly The Antlers (indeed Port St. Willow recently receiving a ringing endorsement from the band) debut ‘Hospice’ and Bon Iver’s self titled record, ‘Holiday’ utilises often unintelligible (in a good, as opposed to irritating, manner) falsetto vocals over layered beds of reverb and delay soaked guitars and ambient synths, with sparse drumming. This is highly, highly recommended.

Welcome to the Tumblr for the University of Sheffield's very own Alternative Music Society! Underneath the ominous banner of "alternative music" we attempt to cram everything wild, weird and wonderful from the whole musical spectrum, so don't be afraid. As a society we put on gigs, organise parties, send out literature and good gig listings every fortnight, and generally cause havok.
If you like what you hear, you can easily become a member! It costs £3 - but that'll get you into all our gigs, and few other people's gigs, for cheap! Not to mention it means we get to put on some mindblowingly awesome artist from a far flung corner of the world. Obviously, we want YOU to get involved too! Come to one of our meetings or talk to us at a gig (or on here), and we'll let you into our little coven ;). We need your help!
